Minnamurra Wetlands is a nationally recognised site in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia and the newest addition to our Revive of Wetlands project sites.
Just 20 kms south of Wollongong on the south coast of NSW, the 45.82 ha (112ac) site includes Mangroves, Salt Marsh, Swamp Oak Floodplain and Illawarra Rainforest communities, all of which are listed as Endangered Ecological Communities. The extensive mangrove system is also listed as significant under NSW State Environmental Planning Policy No.14. The extent of the wetland area is a remarkable example of what the vast Southern Rivers wetlands would have once looked like
There are 6 endangered flora species and at least 12 fauna species recorded as endangered in the locality. It contains significant habitat for these and many more common species and communities.
In partnership with land-owners and the local community, project works will include planting, weed mapping and management, salvaging and relocating native plants and caring for built cultural heritage features.
