Situated 50km south of Nowra, Lake
Conjola is an intertidal area covering some 7km2
There are a range of wetland
habitats including sandy shoals, saltmarsh, fringing sandflats and
mudflats.
The site is designated as a SEPP
14 wetlands and seagrasses community in NSW.
It provides habitat to a number of
Threatened Bird Species including Hooded Plover, Little Tern, Pied
Oyster Catcher and a number of other migratory species that are covered
under international migratory bird agreements with Japan and China.
The main threats to the lagoon
come from weed invasion, poor water quality entering the lagoon from the
neighbouring properties and grazing of foreshore vegetation within wetland
fringes.
Volunteers will be involved in
fencing of the wetland to remove stock, seed collection and propagation to
plant out buffer zones around the fringes of the lagoon.
