Between Wollongong and Nowra, on the south coast of New South Wales, are Tom Thumb, Werri Lagoon, Coomonderry Swamp, Minnamurra wetland and Lake Conjola. Tom Thumb, Wollongong, is a remnant 5 ha urban wetland containing significant saltmarsh and mudflat habitat. Coomonderry Lagoon, Shoalhaven Heads is a large freshwater swamp supporting a range of bird species and threatened Green and Golden Bell Frog. Lake Conjola and Werri are smaller, but still significant, wetlands in the Shoalhaven region and are largely owned/managed by private landholders. Minamurra wetland is a nationally recognized site containing Mangroves, Salt Marsh, Swamp Oak floodplain and Illawarra Rainforest communities and 12 fauna species recorded as endangered in the locality.
The basis for all these projects is to restore the habitat of these important coastal wetlands by encouraging and educating the local community and private landowners about the importance and value of wetlands. Priority conservation works include fencing out stock from ripairian and wetland fringes, weed removal and mapping of weeds, revegetation and seed collection and propagation.
