Conservation Volunteers

Back Beach and Westside Beach,  SA

Back Beach is located near Port Augusta and comprises of approximately 200ha of tidal samphire and mangrove habitat.  The area is highly degraded from settling pond run-off draining into the tidal creek.  This site is ear-marked for DEH to commence trialing for their Marine Planning Performance Indicators monitoring program.

Westside Beach comprises 20ha of tidal samphire and mangrove habitat.  It is adjacent to urban development and is under constant pressure from public inappropriate uses, stormwater drainage causing silting of the near shore mangrove vegetation and pest plant and animal incursions.

This site has high visitation with a lot of damage caused by vehicles. Volunteers will build fences and place totems to limit vehicle access. They will also undertake a variety of activities to assist the site in recovering from much of the human and feral animal impact, including weed control, seed collection, propagation,  revegetation and rubbish removal.
